Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs)

Here's a trade-off most people never hear about: the chlorine that keeps public water safe also reacts with natural organic matter to create disinfection byproducts, or DBPs. The two regulated families — trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids — have been linked at higher long-term levels to certain cancers and reproductive concerns. Disinfection itself is a good thing and isn't going anywhere; the goal at home is simply to trim how much ends up in your glass — something a good activated-carbon filter does really well. 💧
